People who litter York's streets with cigarette butts are to be targeted as part of a new campaign by City of York Council to keep the streets clean.
The Council's Street Environment Team are launching the campaign to remind people that dropping cigarette butts can lead to a £75 fine.
Members of the council's Street Environment team will be in Parliament Street on Wednesday and Thursday handing out information about the campaign as well as personal cigarette and litter disposal pouches.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, Councillor Ann Reid backed the campaign saying, "Cigarette butts are a major cause of litter in York, especially now more people are smoking outside following the smoking ban."
"The campaign will remind people to take responsibility for the cleanliness of our streets and to dispose of their cigarette butts properly."
"While the Council does all it can to keep the city's streets free of litter it is important that people play their part by not dropping litter in the first place."
