Friday 9th October is Bookstart Day and to celebrate York's libraries will be holding a number of nursery rhyme themed events for younger library users.
The events will be held during weekly story time at libraries across the city and will see children enjoying their favourite nursery rhymes and learning some new ones.
Bookstart is a national programme aimed at encouraging parents and carers to enjoy books with their children.
Working in partnership with local authorities and health professionals across the country, it aims to provide a free pack of books to every baby in the UK.
The aim is to show young children that books are fun and get them into reading at an early age.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Social Inclusion, Councillor Nigel Ayre said, "It is important that children are introduced to books from an early age and Bookstart is a great way to do that."
"An interest in reading can really help young children do well when they get to school and it is important that they learn to enjoy reading. These events will show young children that books can be fun and encourage parents and carers to read more with their children."
"Hopefully the events to celebrate Bookstart Day will encourage some new visitors to our libraries which have a great deal to offer young children."
