Work has begun on a scheme which hopes to cut traffic congestion on a busy stretch of road in York.
The work will see the traffic island on Clifton Moor Gate, near the junction with Water Lane, relocated to allow for the extension of the right turning filter lane.
The work will see the filter lane more than double in length, from 35m to 75m while the traffic island will be relocated further away from the junction
Local Liberal Demcorat Councillor Richard Moore welcomed the improvements. He said, "We have been campaigning for these changes for some time, so I am delighted that work is now underway."
"Currently the traffic island, which is outside the Toyota garage, means that the filter lane is quite short. This is causing delays for drivers who are travelling towards the Bumper Castle as they are held up by people waiting to turn right."
"The changes should mean people travelling towards the Bumper Castle can get through the junction easier and should help ease some of the congestion."
Councillor Moore said he would also be campaigning to get the traffic island outside the Volkswagen garage narrowed to allow for the introduction of a left turn filter lane for cars turning into Water Lane from the northbound side of Clifton Moor Gate.
