The transformation of York Central Library in a 21st Century Explore Centre is also set to give a boost to the local construction industry.
York based FW Leighton have been chosen to carry out the work for the £540,000 transformation of the library which gets underway this week.
The decision to appoint a local contractor will give a boost to the local construction industry which has been hit hard by the recession.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Social Inclusion, Councillor Nigel Ayre said he was pleased a local contractor would be carrying out the work.
He said, "The council has been doing all it can to help local businesses through the recession and it is good to see that our investment in improving the library facilities in the city centre will also benefit local industry."
"Our investment in leisure and culture across the city will not only provide local residents and visitors with state of the art new facilities but will also help to kick start the local economy."
Councillor Ayre said the investment in culture in the city was highlighted by almost £3.5m in investment that would be taking place in the area around the central library in the next few months.
"In addition to the improvements to the central library the next few months will see work get underway on the £2m refurbishment of the Yorkshire Museum and the £900,000 new Visit York HQ."
"Once the work is completed the new facilities, combined with existing attractions such as the Minster will reinvigorate the cultural heart of York for residents and visitors alike and will provide a much needed boost for businesses in the city."
