Consultation gets underway next week on plans for six new play areas across the city and residents are being urged to have their say on the designs.
Plans for the new play areas, funded through a £1m grant from Playbuilder, will go on display over the next few weeks in schools, community centres and libraries close to the sites of the new play areas.
The new Playbuilder sites will be located at:
· Balfour Street / Back Park - Holgate
· Viking Road - Acomb
· Ashton Avenue - Clifton
· Barfield Road - Heworth
· Sowerby Road - Holgate
· Chesneys Field - Westfield
Two new Playbuilder sites have already opened in Naburn and Elvington, with construction underway at a further site in Bishopthorpe.
In total Playbuilder will fund 22 play areas across the city providing open access play facilities for 8 to 13 year olds.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Leisure, Councillor Nigel Ayre said the consultation was vital in order to ensure the new play areas met the needs of local children and residents.
He said, "The Playbuilder funding gives us a great opportunity to build new play areas across the city. It is important that the designs for these new facilities are shaped by the people who are going to use them. I would encourage everyone to have a look at the designs and help us to ensure they meet the needs of local children."
"The Playbuilder funding has been targeted to places where facilities were in short supply. I am sure that once completed, these new play areas will provide the city's children and young people with some fantastic new places to get outside and really enjoy themselves."
All 22 of the Playbuilder sites are due to be completed by the end of 2010/11.
