Year 7 pupils at Burnholme Community College have been given the chance to design their own fruit and vegetable garden thanks to a partnership between City of York Council and York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership.
The pupils will be designing plots for the garden where pupils will have the chance to grown their own fruit and vegetables while learning about the health and environmental benefits of growing their own food.
Plots in the garden will also be offered to the local community and local businesses.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Children and Young People's Services, Councillor Carol Runciman will be helping to judge the ideas for the grow your own plots later this week.
Cllr Runciman said, "This is a fantastic project which will teach the pupils the skills needed to grow their own food. Hopefully they will be inspired to try growing their own food at home and will continue to do so into their adult lives."
"It is important that children and young people understand where their food comes from and appreciate that it does not simply come from supermarket shelves."
Councillor Runciman also welcomed the involvement of the local community in the project. She said, "Projects like this can be successful when only the school is involved but they take on an added dimension when the local community are involved."
"This project will help to bring local people into the school and should foster a great sense of community around the new garden."
