York's thousands of dedicated carers will have the opportunity to access support and financial advice this week as special events are held to mark Carers' Rights Day 2009 on Friday 4th December.
The theme of this year's Carers' Right Day is 'caring for your income and pension' and City of York Council, along with York Carers' Forum and York Carers' Centre will be providing advice to carers to ensure they are aware of their right to benefits, help and support.
York Carers Forum will hold an information cafe for carers and their families and friends from 10.30 am to 4pm at St Michael Le Belfry Church, on the 4th December.
Advisors will also be on hand at Sainsbury's, Monks Cross, the Co-op, Haxby, and York Hospital from 10 am to 3.30 pm to provide advice and support.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Housing and Adult Social Services, Councillor Jonathan Morley said, "Many carers are not claiming the benefits that they are entitled to and are struggling to make ends meet as a result."
"I hope that the publicity and events around Carers' Rights Day will help to increase the take up of benefits and help to ensure carers take advantage of the support available to them."
Cllr Morley added, "Carers' hard work and dedication makes so much difference to the lives of those they care for. It is important they receive all the support they are entitled to. That's why we want to make sure they are aware of the help that is available to them."
