Plans to improve traffic safety at one of York's most dangerous junctions moved a step closer yesterday as a proposed scheme was approved by the Council's Executive Member for City Strategy, Councillor Steve Galloway.
Council officers have drawn up plans to install traffic lights at the junction of Mill Lane and the B1363 in Wigginton. The plans also include the introduction of a 40mph speed limit on the B1363 around the junction.
The decision to draw up designs for improvements to the junction was made by Councillor Galloway in July and the scheme has received widespread support from local residents.
Council officers warned in July that the busy junction 'may be leading to inappropriate risks being taken by drivers', making the junction potentially dangerous.
Haxby and Wigginton Councillor Paul Firth spoke in favour of the proposals at the meeting in July and fellow Councillor Richard Watson attended the meeting last night to back the plans.
Councillor Firth said, "A solution to this issue has been needed for a number of years and the situation has been steadily worsening with the increase in traffic using the junction."
"There have been a number of serious accidents at this junction in recent years and it is important that measures are put in place to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians. The proposed improvements should have a big impact on the safety of the junction."
"I am glad that the scheme is moving forward and look forward to work getting underway on these vital improvements."
Work is expected to get underway on the scheme in early 2010.
