York's Adult Social Services have been praised by independent inspectors who have rated the services as 'Performing Well', the second highest rating under the assessment scheme.
The 2008/09 assessment by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) said good progress had been made on implementing improvements to the service, suggested in the 2007/08 inspection.
Adult safeguarding services also received the 'Performing Well' rating with only 12 authorities in the country receiving a higher rating.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Housing and Adult Social Services, Councillor Jonathan Morley praised adult social services staff for achieving the improved rating.
He said, "I am very pleased that the progress made over the past year has been recognised by the inspectors. Staff have worked very hard to deliver improvements across the service, picking up issues highlighted in last year's report."
"Given the background of increased demand that the service is operating under it is especially impressive that improvements have been implemented so quickly."
"I am very pleased that adult safeguarding services have been rated so highly. The Council takes its safeguarding role very seriously and I am glad to see that this has been reflected in the inspection."
"Talking to staff it is clear that while they are very pleased with this inspection result, they are very keen to push on even further with the ultimate aim of achieving an 'Excellent' rating for the service."
