FULFORD PARK RESIDENTS PETITION FOR RETHINK ON FULFORD ROAD IMPROVEMENT PLANS

December 8, 2009 12:00 AM

Residents in the area of Fulford Park, Fulford have raised concerns about proposed changes with the Fulford Road improvement plans in their area.

Revised plans had been re-submitted to Fulford Parish Council for consultation after local Councillor Keith Aspden voiced concerns over the original plans.

Councillor Aspden said, "Residents were unhappy with the original scheme so following discussions with the Executive Member for City Strategy they were put out for further local consultation in order to iron out some of the issues before the improvements start early next year."

"However, following that consultation there are still elements of the scheme that are causing concern to us locally."

Councillor Aspden submitted a petition to the full council meeting last week, signed by 48 local residents in the immediate area calling for parts of the final scheme to be revised.

Councillor Aspden said residents were primarily concerned about plans to narrow the entrance to Fulford Park. He said, "The plans included the narrowing of the road at the entrance to Fulford Park. Residents were concerned that this would make access for vehicles more difficult, while providing little benefit to pedestrians. The benefits of this part of the plans don't seem to provide value for money, especially when you consider the problems it might create for residents accessing Fulford Park."

Concerns have also been raised about the impact of proposed new road markings on the look of the conservation area. Councillor Aspden said, "There has been some concern that new double yellow lines and green markings for the cycle lanes would have a detrimental effect on the look of the area."

"Clearly these markings are needed in places for safety but I would call on officers to ensure they are only used where necessary and that they use suitable pale colours. This will help protect the conservation area."

Councillor Aspden said following the collection of the petition he had already had constructive discussions with Council officers about the plans. He said:

"Following my petition with residents, we seem to be making good progress on the key areas of concern, for example, I am hopeful that the narrowing of Fulford Park will be withdrawn as part of the scheme. I am grateful to council officers for listening to our concerns and I hope that we are able find a solution that suits the majority of residents."
