The services provided to children with disabilities in York have been hailed as an example for other local authorities to follow in a report published today by the Audit Commission.
The findings of the Comprehensive Area Assessment have been published by the Audit Commission, which assesses the performance of local authorities and their partners.
York's services to children with disabilities received a green flag, indicating that they are of outstanding quality and are an example of innovative practice that other authorities should be following.
The report describes the service in York as being 'significantly on the front foot' and says the understanding and commitment to inclusion is 'well embedded' across the service.
The satisfaction of parents also features in the reports assessment of services to children with disabilities.
Earlier this year a survey found that parents of children with disabilities in York were happier with the health, education and social care services in York than anywhere else in the country.
The CAA report also includes confirmation of the 'Excellent', four star rating given to the city's Children's Services by Ofsted inspectors. The inspectors specifically highlight the city's excellent exam results, which are among the best in the country, as a major factor behind the high rating of the service.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Children and Young People's Services, Councillor Carol Runciman said, "I am delighted that the excellent work done in the department has been recognised by independent inspectors. Very few local authorities in the region have been awarded any green flags and not many of those have gone to children's services."
"This report demonstrates that services to children in the city are of an exceptionally high standard and I am especially proud that we are doing so well in services to children with disabilities."
"Their lives and those of their families can be very challenging and it is important that we do everything we can to support them."
"My thanks go to everyone who has contributed to this tremendous result."
