A £175,000 scheme to bring the Melbourne Centre in Fishergate back into community use is set to be approved today by Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Social Inclusion, Councillor Nigel Ayre.
The proposal will see the Blueberry Academy take a 15 year lease on the Melbourne centre to provide affordable community facilities for learning, leisure and other community activities.
Existing user groups will be accommodated into the new planning and management arrangements for the centre and the new centre will have a dedicated user group of disabled people to ensure accessibility is at the centre of the plans for improving the centre.
Once in place the Blueberry Academy are likely to seek external funding for further improvements to the centre, possibly including
Changing rooms to support improved use of outside area
ICT technology to support learning and provide a hub for community use
Social enterprise activity to create jobs and provide development routes for people in social care
Environmentally friendly energy solutions for the centre /school
The proposals would see the centre used by community groups, playgroups and disability sports groups as well as providing space for adult education, sports and leisure and meetings.
Councillor Nigel Ayre is set to approve the funding at his Executive Member Decision Session today.
Councillor Ayre said, "Although there are a few groups using the Melbourne Centre at the moment it is essentially empty most of the time. This funding will help to bring the centre fully into use and provide a great facility for the local community."
