Commenting on the publication of the latest Job Seekers Allowance claimant figures, Liberal Democrat Leader of City of York Council, Councillor Andrew Waller said:
"York experiences a strong seasonal influence of Job Seekers Allowance figures each year in January, with the figure this year being an overall increase of 236."
"This was less than the increase in January 2009 and is the difference between 986 coming onto the register and 735 coming off with new jobs or training."
"It does shows that the city must make full use of opportunities like the Terry's development if it wants to see a successful economy. There are other projects in the pipeline to create new jobs with the investment in the new 5 Star Hotel, and I am pleased that local builders Shepherds will be engaged with the new primary schools to replace English Martyrs' and Our Lady's, and Clifton with Rawcliffe."
