The York Opportunities Fair returns for a second year in 2010 with the intention of helping disabled young people and those with additional needs plan for the future and develop high aspirations.
The fair organised by City of York Council, will be held on Thursday 1 April at York St John University at the De Grey and Foss Sports Hall. Its 30 stands will be open from 10:00 to 18:00 in an effort to encourage young people, parents and carers to attend after school or work.
The fair is designed to help those young people with learning difficulties, special educational needs or disabilities. Useful information will also be made available to the parents/carers of these young people.
Courses on animal care, horticulture and accessible music technology are just some of the workshops that will me made available to attendees. Additionally, personal help information will be made available regarding budgets, benefits as well as self help and stress management courses.
Staff members will be available for one to one guidance and to help the young people gather information to work towards greater life goals.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Children and Young People's Services, Councillor Carol Runciman, who will be attending the fair, has welcomed the second year of the project saying, "This will be a great opportunity for these young people to raise their ambitions regarding what they can achieve in the future."
"This fair will provide valuable information to young people with disabilities and additional needs on the availability of jobs, college courses and the possibility to gain work experience. Older young people who have been helped by the scheme will be present to inspire new visitors with what they have achieved."
