The City of York Council's 13th Annual Schools Drama Festival returns to York this weekend with over 500 young performers from across the city taking part.
Young people from 21 primary, secondary schools and youth theatre groups will come together this Saturday and Sunday (20th & 21st March) to perform in the Central Hall, University of York.
Young performers from ages 5 to 16 will be creating and exhibiting ten-minute performances based on the theme 'tall tales'. The event will be coordinated by the council's Arts Education team.
Catherine Heinemeyer, a local storyteller, kick-started the festival back in December 2009 with a training session aimed at informing directors and coordinators of how the 'tall tales' theme could be approached by the young people taking part.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Social Inclusion, Councillor Nigel Ayre said he hoped the festival would foster creative thought in the young performers taking part.
He said, "This festival is a great opportunity for those taking part to communicate with other young people and become inspired by the dramatic arts.
"The fact that the festival is returning for a 13th year highlights the success it has had in involving the young people of York in such programmes."
Performances begin at 2.30pm on both days. Tickets for the festival are available by contacting the Arts and Culture team on 01904 554660. A limited number of tickets will be available on the door.
