COUNCIL PROVIDES RESIDENTS WITH FREE COMPOST

April 21, 2010 12:00 AM

Local residents will have access to free compost this summer thanks to the City of York Council and Yorwaste Ltd.

The compost can be collected from Yorwaste's Harewood Whin site, on Tinker Lane, off Wetherby Road on:

Sunday 2 May

Sunday 6 June

Sunday 4 July

Sunday 1 August

Sunday 5 September

The compost will be available from 9.30am until 2.30pm each day and residents are asked to bring a shovel and bags or containers to take the compost home in.

Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, Councillor Ann Reid welcomed the scheme saying, "This is a great way for residents without composters to have access to good quality compost this summer."

"The compost that will be available has been made using the garden waste collected from resident's green bins. By using this compost locals will be putting back into the soil what has been taken away which will be a significant step in protecting the environment."

"The soil improver is of excellent quality and the thanks for this go to local people who take great care in ensuring they do not mix their garden waste with any other kind of waste."
