Commenting on the news that the number of people claiming Job Seeker's Allowance in York fell last month, Liberal Democrat Leader of City of York Council, Councillor Andrew Waller said:
"The reduction is welcome, but clearly there will be a long road ahead to reduce the figures to where they were three years ago."
"New hotels and businesses have opened in the city which is having an impact. I have met with Network Rail to press for as many former Jarvis employees to be transferred by TUPE to carry on the work to upgrade the East Coast Mainline."
"It is good news that York born Vince Cable has been appointed as Business Secretary from the point of view of having someone who understand the need for the banks to lend for businesses to grow and increase employment."
"I pressed the local managers in banks in the city when I meet them to do this, and the message is getting through - some are even saying that they would like more businesses to come forward."
