The number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance in York fell by 219 in May to 3738, or 2.9% of the working age population.
This compares to an average of 4.6% for the region and 3.9% nationally.
Commenting on the figures, Liberal Democrat Leader of the Council, Councillor Andrew Waller said, "It is good to see the figures moving in the right direction, the figures for April were down by 49, and these latest figures for May are down by 219, however, there is still a great deal of effort to be done to develop new jobs in the city, and there is seasonality of employment to consider."
"The investment in tourism with the new Visitor Information Centre, new Cedar Court Grand Hotel, and soon to be refurbished Yorkshire Museum is going to help with a key sector of the economy that employs 23,000 people."
