COUNCIL TEAMS UP WITH YORK ST JOHN FOR NEW TRAINING SCHEME FOR SCHOOL GOVERNORS

June 18, 2010 12:00 AM

City of York Council have teamed up with York St John University to provide a new training scheme for the city's school governors.

All governors and governing bodies will be able to choose from a range online and face-to-face training from September. Key areas of training include:

The role of the School Governors

The role of the Clerk to the Governors

Leading the Governing Body

School Improvement

The scheme will give governors the opportunity to apply for their learning to be accredited by the University and work towards a Foundation Certificate in School Governance.

The training has been specifically developed in response to the increasingly demanding role of governors and will help them prepare for changes proposed the Education White Paper - Your child, your schools, our future: building a 21st century schools system.

The scheme will be supported by Higher York, the existing partnership between Askham Bryan College, the University of York, York College, York St John University, Craven College and City of York Council.

Governors who choose for their learning to be accredited by the University will be classed as students and will have access to a student card, use of all facilities at York St John University and additional support from their tutor.

Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Children and Young People's Services, Councillor Carol Runciman welcomed the launch of the scheme. She said, "I am pleased that this scheme is going ahead as it offers governors and governing bodies an perfect opportunity to learn, develop and utilize new skills."

Councillor Runciman urged governors to take advantage of the opportunity. She said, "I would urge governors to make use of this scheme as in the next few years governors and governing bodies are going to have some very hard, very important decisions about changes in the education system."

"The training scheme will help to prepare them for these decisions and will make sure they have access to all the help and advice they need in order to carry out their role effectively."

The new scheme will be officially launched for at York St John University on Thursday 24 June.
