Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Children and Young People's Services, Councillor Carol Runciman has today welcomed the news that once again pupils in York's schools have performed well in their Key Stage 2 assessments.
The number of pupils achieving Level 4, the expected grade for 11 year olds, was higher than last year and once again exceeded the national average.
In English the number of pupils achieving Level 4 rose from 81% to 83% and beat the national average by two percentage points. In Maths the figure rose from 80% to 83% per cent putting the figure three percentage points higher than the national average.
The number of pupils achieving Level 5 was also above the national average. In English, 35%of pupils achieved Level 5 (two percentage points above the national average) and in Maths the figure was 38% (three percentage points above the national average).
Councillor Runciman said, "These are another excellent set of results for the pupils and staff at York's schools, they should all be very proud of their achievements."
"Once again the results exceed the national average and show that York's schools all provide a fantastic education for all the city's children."
Councillor Runciman added, "The high number of pupils exceeding the expected levels and achieving level 5 shows that our schools are doing an excellent job of pushing talented pupils to achieve more, while ensuring that nobody gets left behind."
Councillor Runciman said that the results were a good sign for the future. She said, "Good Key Stage 2 results provide a stepping stone for good results at Key Stages 3 and 4 and good results at GCSE further down the line."
"I am sure that pupils and staff will been keen to build on this success and I have every confidence that they will be able to do so."
