Councillor Nigel Ayre
One of the earliest known works of literature, the classic poem The Epic of Gilgamesh, is going to be re-enacted in York in September. The event will be held on Saturday 11th September in Explore York Library Learning Centre at 7.30pm.
Kirklees Libraries has commissioned the writer, musician and storyteller Simon Heywood to team up with award winning young storyteller Tim Ralphs to present a new version of this ancient classic, as part of the Explore Story series of storytelling events for adults.
The Epic of Gilgamesh is an ancient poem from Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq, southwest Turkey, Syria and southwest Iran) and is a rediscovery of one of the oldest yet still most relevant stories in human society. The collaboration details Gilgamesh's journey full of love, grief and growth.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member Councillor Nigel Ayre said, "This is a fantastic opportunity to hear one of the oldest pieces of literature in the world brought to life in unique re-enactment."
"This kind of event is a great way to encourage people to read more and to find out about the fantastic facilities our libraries have to offer."
Tickets will cost £5 and can be purchased from Explore York by calling 01904 552828. The event is unsuitable for under 15s.
