As the Labour Cabinet look set to decide to abandon York's historic Guildhall, Liberal Democrat Group Leader Councillor Carol Runciman said she was concerned that they had not yet set out a vision for the future of the building.
She said, "The original plan set out by the Liberal Democrat administration was that the new Council Headquarters would be a building for Council officers and local residents, with Politicians and public meetings remaining in the Guildhall. Labour now seem to have revised that plan, but without any real vision for what might happen to the Guildhall."
"The Guildhall has been the centre of York's democracy for many years and I am very concerned that the future of the building could be determined by the Cabinet on the basis of a report that contains few options and even fewer details."
"The Guildhall is not simply an office for which new tenants need to be found, it is an important part of the city's heritage and any decisions about its future should be taken carefully and should be based on a clear vision for how the building should be used in future."
