Council Leader Andrew Waller attended the promotion of WhizzGo in Parliament Street on Saturday, to lend support to the car club which promotes sustainable transport in York.

WhizzGo is a car hire service that allows people to rent a car cheaply, by the hour, from on street locations around York. The company promotes sustainable transport as it makes cars available to residents who would otherwise need to buy their own car which may be used infrequently. This can be a waste of money, inconvenient and unenvironmentally friendly.

WhizzGo's service allows people to hire a car for the infrequent trips they may need to make or as an alternative to owning a second car. Companies can also use WhizzGo for business trips and thus avoid commuting into York using personal or company cars.

The hire cars have low-emissions and are located in reserved parking spaces in the city centre so are easy for people to reach.

Councillor Waller said, "I have always supported WhizzGo as it provides a great way for residents to avoid buying a second car or even a first one. It is environmentally friendly as it reduces the number of cars in the city centre, and saves residents the full costs of running a car.

"I am very pleased that City of York Council works with WhizzGo York to provide sustainable transport in York, and it is great that the cost of joining the scheme has fallen as WhizzGo York has expanded, with several more cars now available."

WhizzGo car parking spaces are at Union Terrace car park, St Leonard's Place car park, Nunnery Lane car park, Peel Street car park, Bishopthorpe Road car park and Fulford Road (on street) and now at the new location of York Station.

Locations expected soon: Lawrence Street, Innovation Way (near the University of York) and Park Grove.
