Council set for compromise on Fulford Road plans12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 20th Jun 2009 The Council consulted with residents on plans for the Fulford Road corridor, including cycling, bus and pedestrian improvements earlier this year. Councillor Keith Aspden, the Liberal Democrat ward councillor for Fulford, and local residents, objected to various parts of the scheme, including the fact that there were plans for a significant reduction in local parking, the removal of the two lane exit from Heslington Lane, and that in one location new cycle ways were planned both on and off road going in the same direction. After these successful representations, the Council agreed to look again at the Main Street and Heslington Lane aspects of the scheme. Councillor Keith Aspden commented "Following a recent meeting with the Parish Council and local residents the Council looks set to make a compromise, which will see the retention of some parking to the east and west of Main Street, as well as the retention of the two lane exit from Heslington Lane. This is good news, and local residents, as well as local businesses and the Church will be pleased with this outcome. I will continue to call for these schemes to be implemented sensibly, including speaking on behalf of residents at the future decision making session, so that the goal of improvements for pedestrians, buses and cyclists can be made alongside discussion with local residents." A decision is set to be made when the final report is published for the Executive Member decision making session on 7 July 2009
