TIPS ON HAVING A GREENER CHRISTMAS FROM CITY OF YORK COUNCIL

12.00.00am GMT Wed 16th Dec 2009

Residents in York who want to have a greener Christmas can now get tips on reducing, reusing and recycling their waste thanks to City of York Council

The tips are available on City of York Council's website at http://www.york.gov.uk/environment/waste/greenxmas/.

The tips include ideas and recipes for what to do with leftover food from Christmas meals

Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, Councillor Ann Reid said, "On average each family throws away £50 worth of food at Christmas time. Not only is it a waste of money but it also means extra waste going to landfill sites."

"The cooking with leftovers demonstrations by Ash Metcalfe at the Food and Drink Festival proved very popular earlier this year and I am sure people will be keen to try something new this Christmas."

"The tips provided will give people some creative new ideas for an alternative to eating turkey sandwiches for weeks or simply throwing food away."

The site also provides tips on reusing wrapping paper and Christmas cards as well as giving details of where Christmas trees can by recycled once the festivities are over.

Councillor Reid said, "With all the waste generated at Christmas time it can be difficult to make sure everything that can be reused or recycled is kept out of the waste bin."

"The tips will hopefully make it easier for people as well as giving them some now ideas."

Councillor Reid added, "Residents will shortly be getting information on waste collection times and dates for Christmas and the New Year. In addition to the kerbside collections our Household Waste Recycling Centres will be open throughout the holidays with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
