YORK GCSE RESULTS IN TOP 10% NATIONALLY

12.00.00am GMT Wed 20th Jan 2010

Results published today show that pupils in York's schools have once again performed exceptionally well, with more pupils achieving top grades compared to last year.

They show that in 2008/09, 73% of young people in York achieved five or more A* to C grades, up 5% on the previous year.

The percentage of pupils gaining five or more A*-C grades, including English and Maths GCSE, also rose by 5% to 59%.

These results put York in the top 10% nationally, further cementing York's position as one of the top education authorities in the country.

The news comes a week after York played host to the prestigious NEEC 2010 conference, which brought education professionals from across the country to the city. At the conference, many of York's young people demonstrated their talents in art, dance, drama and music.

Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Children and Young People's Services, Councillor Carol Runciman praised staff, students and parents for the results.

She said, "During NEEC 2010 we were very keen to showcase the success of our schools in providing pupils with a good all round education for life, not just teaching them to pass exams."

"Today's announcement shows that all this hard work is paying off in terms of results as well as producing young people who can really demonstrate their potential to a wider audience."

"I would like to congratulate everyone involved on these fantastic results."
