COUNCILLORS WELCOME NEW MEASURES TO CUT SPEEDING IN HAXBY12.00.00am GMT Wed 24th Feb 2010 The decision to approve new Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) on three roads in Haxby in a bid to cut speeding has been welcomed by local Councillors, who had been pushing for the signs to be introduced. Liberal Democrat Councillors Richard Watson, Paul Firth and Chris Hogg had asked Councillor Officers to install the signs on Towthorpe Road, Usher Lane and York Road in Haxby, hoping they would help cut the number of drivers speeding in the area. The signs were approved by Liberal Democrat Executive Member for City Strategy, Councillor Steve Galloway at a meeting with senior Council Officers yesterday. Councillor Watson said he hoped the new signs would have an impact on traffic speeds on the three roads. He said, "Local residents have contacted us with their concerns about speed in these areas and we were keen to have action taken to make the roads safer. "On York Road, by doing speed tests, we have proved that the VAS' really do have an effect. These new ones are targeted for outbound motorists and speeding is a problem outside the rush hour periods." "Vehicle Activated Signs have been successful in making drivers more aware of their speed in other areas and I hope that they will have the same impact here." It is hoped the signs will be installed by the end of March.
