Building York's future together

On behalf of residents requesting the closure of the snicket between Moor Lane Bridge and Old Moor Lane

Speech by Cllr Ann Reid on Thu 22nd Jan 2009

I present a petition from 14 residents of Old Moor Lane asking for the snicket from Moor Lane Railway Bridge to Old Moor Lane to be closed or at worst to be gated.

Although not the largest petition presented tonight it is non the less heart felt as the residents suffer from a wide range of anti-social and potentially criminal behaviour that includes damage to and theft from property, noise nuisance and swearing and graffiti. The snicket runs along the backs of properties and is not overlooked so it is nearly impossible to catch the trouble makers.

It is also a snicket that really goes nowhere. It doesn't really provide any kind of shortcut from Moor Lane to Tadcaster Rd and it doesn't take residents who live on Old Moor Lane to anywhere. The people most likely to be inconvenienced are the residents who have signed the petition.

I would be grateful if the petition could be referred for consideration to the appropriate Committee as it has been gathered by residents themselves who have put up with these problems for a number of years and would like some peace. Ideally they would like it closed completely but understand the problems surrounding closing rights of way and would settle for night time closure if necessary.
