York Lib Dems support National Clean Air Day

June 15, 2017 4:13 PM

Andrew Clean Air DayToday is the first National Clean Air Day and Liberal Democrat Councillors in York are taking part. Air pollution increases the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and asthma attacks, as well as being associated with dementia. The health burden of air pollution is unnecessary and National Clean Air Day is all about giving everyone the tools and inspiration to reduce pollution now.

Cllr Andrew Waller, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for the Environment has been working with Westfield Primary School on clean air and how important it is for children's health.

Cllr Andrew Waller said:

"Today, York is part of a nationwide day to promote clean air. We are encouraging residents to make changes in their daily life so that they reduce pollution and help to protect good health. By cutting down unnecessary journeys or using less polluting transport we can all make a difference, and lots of people in York have already done this."

In the past 18 months, City of York Council, with the Liberal Democrats as part of the administration, has:

  • Introduced electric buses on Park & Ride services at Poppleton Bar and Monk's Cross Park with a third service due shortly
  • Retrofitted the world's first electric double-decker sightseeing bus with a further five retrofits due in the autumn
  • Converted around 13 per cent of the city's 100 taxis to low emission alternatives and specified minimum emission standards for new or replacement taxis
  • Implemented a 'pay as you go' fast-charge public electric vehicle recharging network in addition to 11 publicly accessible rapid chargers across the city
  • As Yorkshire's sole authority to win 'Go Ultra Low' city status, we've been awarded £816,000 from the Office of Low Emission Vehicles to fund a city-wide network of electrical charging hubs
  • Developed low emission planning guidance which requires electric vehicle recharge infrastructure, construction environmental management plans and emission mitigation plans on new developments.
