Campaigner demands urgent action on sewage dumping
Liberal Democrat campaigner Andrew Mortimer has written to Yorkshire Water Chief Executive Nicola Shaw demanding urgent action to stop sewage being dumped in Osbaldwick Beck where it runs through Hull Road Park.
The Lib Dem is continuing his ‘Stop the Stink’ campaign which was well received during the recent Hull Road ward council by-election campaign by local residents who are fed up with Yorkshire Water’s actions. The by-election saw Labour’s majority slashed, with the Lib Dems coming a close second
In his letter to Ms Shaw, Andrew Mortimer points out that a week ago the sewer once again discharged into the beck in the park. He also highlights the fact that at the Rawdon Avenue Combined Sewer Overflow the situation is much worse, with sewage discharged much more frequently and for longer periods. In 2023 this was for over 100 hours.
Andrew Mortimer commented: “I’d like to thank all the local residents who have backed our Stop the Stink campaign - we will continue to keep up the pressure on Yorkshire Water. The recent £47 million fine imposed by Ofwat will hopefully act as a wake-up call for Yorkshire Water to clean up its act. I appreciate the scale of this problem across the region, but there cannot be many public parks in Yorkshire where this is happening. The time for action is now.”
