Councillors call for changes to Ryedale Court Disabled Parking Scheme
Haxby and Wigginton's Lib Dem Councillors have written to the Co-Op Group and to the landowners of Ryedale Court Shopping Centre in Haxby to request an urgent revision to the disabled car parking arrangements recently put in place during resurfacing and repainting work undertaken at the shopping centre.
Whilst the number of disabled parking spaces has increased from 1 to 4, the width of the spaces has halved, making the disabled spaces of no greater use to residents using wheelchairs. The previous space was approximately 2.5m wide, with a buffer zone approximately 1.2m wide on either side - meeting standards for disabled parking spaces.
However, following the resurfacing work, two of the new spaces are 3m wide and two are just 2.5m wide, with no buffer zones. Councillor Andrew Hollyer said: "Whilst it is good news that the number of spaces has increased, it is disappointing there are now no spaces meeting the required standard. We have asked the operators of the car park to return to repaint four spaces which clearly meet accessibility guidelines urgently. Improving accessibility into Haxby is one of our key priorities and I hope that ultimately the spaces will be marked out better with an improved outcome for residents."
