Councillors hit out at Government Covid rule breaking
Responding to the ITV video which shows Downing Street staff laughing last year about a Christmas party being held, Councillor Carol Runciman, Executive Member for Health and Adult Social Care, commented:
"Julian Sturdy MP must condemn Boris Johnson's behaviour and apologise on behalf of his party. Whilst people across York spent last Christmas away from loved ones and unable to celebrate - the Prime Minister was breaking his own rules to allow a party in No10. At a time of great sacrifice when the pandemic was at its worst, it is disgraceful to think that people in Downing Street were laughing about holding a Christmas party.
"It's clear that Boris Johnson has never believed the rules apply to him; around self-isolation, mask wearing, or throwing social events. Trust in crucial public health messaging and rules have been undermined by this Government, making the job of local Public Health teams even more complicated.
"The Prime Minister must fess up and apologise both to the nation and the bereaved families still mourning loved ones they lost. Enough is enough. This Government must be held accountable to an inquiry into all their rule breaking; from Barnard Castle to this latest episode. It cannot be one rule for them and another for the rest of us"
