Councillors hit out at ‘silence’ on station plans
Haxby and Wigginton Liberal Democrat Councillors have expressed disappointment after a request to meet with local Labour politicians to discuss the cancelled Haxby Station project was ignored.
The meeting request was contained in a letter sent to Mayor David Skaith, Council Leader Claire Douglas and Deputy Leader Pete Kilbane, and York Outer MP Luke Charters. One month on from the letter being sent, there has been no response, nor even an acknowledgement.
Shortly after coming into power, the new Labour Government announced that funding for the proposed new station was being axed, despite the work done on the soon-to-be decided planning application and a planned opening date in 2025.
Liberal Democrat Councillors launched a petition to save the station, calling on the Government to reverse their decision or for the new York & North Yorkshire Mayor David Skaith to step in should the Government fail to act. This petition has gained 650 signatures so far.
Councillors Andrew Hollyer, Ed Pearson and Ian Cuthbertson said:
“Residents in the north of York and surrounding villages are clear that they want to see Haxby Station built. It would mean fewer car journeys, improved access to work and leisure and better connections for the northern villages on a direct train service. Labour's silence on this important project speaks volumes - stringing residents along, whilst they dither.
“Their reluctance to meet Liberal Democrat ward councillors will leave residents wondering whether they are really committed to saving Haxby Station. We stand ready to work with politicians of all parties to deliver this vital project.”
