Councillors urge residents to have their say on speed limit proposal for key York route
Local councillors are encouraging residents to have their say on proposals that could see speed limits introduced on a major road in York.
Following traffic investigations, City of York Council is proposing to lower the speed limit on Shipton Road in Rawcliffe & Clifton Without, from 40mph to 30mph. The proposals have now been published for resident consultation, which is set to run till the 21st October.
Local Lib Dem councillors for Rawcliffe & Clifton Without have been campaigning for safety improvements along Shipton Road for many years; from improved pedestrian crossings, better cycle infrastructure and tackling speeding.
Residents can have their say on the proposals by submitting comments to highway.regulation@york.gov.uk or by writing to the Council (West Offices, Station Rise, York, YO1 6GA)
Councillor Darryl Smalley, local Lib Dem councillor for Rawcliffe and Clifton Without, commented:
“Along with my colleagues, we have campaigned for safety improvements along Shipton Road for several years now. Progress has been made on some improvements, we’ve secured extra dropped kerbs, improved street lighting and £305k for active travel improvements (between Rawcliffe P&R and Bootham Bar).
“Local residents have often told us of near misses when trying to leave their drives, and difficulty when trying to cross the road for an evening walk on the Ings or to get to a hospital appointment. It’s crucial that the speed restrictions are placed in the most suitable location to ensure safety is improved to the benefit of all road users. I would urge local residents to explore the proposals and have their say.”
- The council proposes to introduce a 30mph speed limit in Shipton Road (A19), Clifton Without/Rawcliffe between a point 55 metre south from the projected centreline of Galtres Grove (terminal point of exiting 40mph speed limit) and a point 20 metres north west from the projected property boundary line of No. 165 Shipton Road, thereby revoking the existing 40mph speed limit from within that length.
