A Liberal Democrat petition to save the Haxby Village Post Office has hit over 800 signatures in the first 48 hours since its launch.

Since then, Morrisons have apparently indicated that they would be able to host the Post Office in their remaining store on the south side of Haxby.

However, although well served by bus routes, it is not a central location and is some distance from the shopping centre of Haxby. Liberal Democrat Councillors do not consider this to be a sustainable long-term solution and are pushing for a more central location to be found.

Councillor Richard Watson said:

“Thank you to everyone who has signed our petition following news that the Haxby Village Morrisons Daily hosting the local Post Office is set to close (Morrisons are the local 'postmaster'). At the time of writing over 800 people have signed online and on paper.

“We have been in touch with the Post Office and they have confirmed that they are undertaking a review of the Post Office services in the local area and will let us know as soon as this has been completed. The review will inform their next steps in terms of Post Office service provision for the area.

Cllr Ian Cuthbertson added:

“The petition response demonstrates the depth of concern in the local area on this issue. We are calling for Morrisons not to close the Post Office until a new operator for the existing store has been found, or a new venue for the Post Office to move to is found.

Cllr Andrew Hollyer added:

“We have also been in touch with the Co-op who of course have a sizeable store that could host a replacement Post Office next door. However, even should this work out, it would take a number of months to put in place, a period of time when the current store may already be closed.”
