Liberal Democrats launch “Save our Station” campaign
Haxby and Wigginton Liberal Democrat Councillors have launched a petition calling for the government to u-turn on their decision to cancel the Haxby Station project.
Within an hour, over two hundred people had signed.
Despite the decades of work taken to reach this point, the soon to be decided planning application, a promised opening date in 2025, and the millions of pounds secured from the Government for development works it would seem the rug is being pulled at the last minute.
Councillor Ian Cuthbertson said:
“As local councillors we are furious for local residents who have been badly let down over the rug being pulled from under the Haxby station project.
“We are calling for an immediate u-turn and asking residents to add their voices to ours by signing our petition.
“It is shocking to see that one of Labour’s first acts in Government is to scrap the funding for Haxby station and we hope we can change their minds.”
Councillor Ed Pearson said:
“It seems that our new Labour MP has rolled over and accepted the decision. His question in Parliament in response to the Chancellor axing the funding didn’t even mention Haxby Station. He should be leading this fight rather than being a yes-man for the Labour leadership.
“In the coming days and weeks we will be putting pressure on the government to reconsider their Haxby Station decision and if that fails we will press the new York and North Yorkshire Mayor to use his fund to save the project. Every additional signature will help pile on the pressure.”
