Over 500 residents have signed a petition calling on the Labour government to reverse their decision to scrap the funding for Haxby Station.

This petition, created by local Liberal Democrat councillors, is to be presented to both the Government and the York & North Yorkshire Mayor with a plea to restore or replace the funding.

The councillors for Haxby & Wigginton have also written to the York & North Yorkshire Mayor, the Deputy Mayor for Transport, the Council Leader, and the Council’s Transport Executive Member asking that they join the campaign to restore the funding or guarantee that Mayoral funds will be used instead.

Councillors Andrew Hollyer, Ed Pearson and Ian Cuthbertson said in the letter:

“The project is in the late stages of planning approval, with work due to be started early next year. It would be monumentally disappointing for residents across the north of York to see the project derailed so late into the process.

“As the ward Councillors for Haxby and Wigginton, we are writing to ask each of you to support our campaign, to continue to progress the planning application and other technical background work, and to press the government to, in its review of transport capital schemes, honour previous commitments to see Haxby Station delivered by the end of next year.

“Should the Department for Transport refuse this request, we would also ask for a commitment that York and North Yorkshire Mayoral funds will be used to cover this project instead.”
