Liberal Democrats are asking City of York Council who authorised the mowing of the grass verges on Wheldrake Lane despite clear signage on the site designating it a wildflower verge.

Liberal Democrat Councillor for Wheldrake Christian Vassie said:

“The sign is incredibly clear that this grass verge should not be mowed and wildlife should be allowed to thrive here.

“I have had numerous conversations with officers at the Council regarding this since the wildflower verge was created in 2021 and we had agreement that this would not be cut.”

Liberal Democrat Candidate for York Outer, Andrew Hollyer, added:

“The Council has condoned the destruction of important habitat for pollinators in the face of Council policy on the wildlife emergency and highway standards which give a clear maximum 1.5 metre width for cutting on safety grounds.”
