Over 200 affordable homes delivered last year

20 Jun 2022

A new report into the Council’s Finance and Performance has revealed that 224 affordable homes have been delivered in the 2021/22 financial year - the highest number since 2010.

The report, set to be debated by Council’s Executive later tonight, notes that the number of new affordable homes delivered in York remains high, with 224 delivered during 2021-22. This is a large increase on the 130 delivered during 2020-21.

In total 477 affordable homes have been delivered by the Lib Dem led administration over the last 3 years, since 2019.  With current work taking place on Lowfield Green, Former Civil Service Sports Ground, Wilberforce Trust supported apartments, Tadcaster Road and Former York St John playing fields, it is expected that approximately 600 new affordable homes will have been delivered by the Lib Dem-led administration in its 4 years in office.

This compares to 464 homes delivered by the Labour administration over their full term of 4 years at the helm of the city, and 334 affordable homes under the Conservative-led Council from 2015-2019.

Councillor Nigel Ayre, Executive Member for Finance and Major Projects, commented:

“Delivery of affordable housing across the city is a key priority for this administration, so I’m glad to see numbers of houses delivered continue to rise since 2019. This is despite the major challenges brought about by Brexit, the pandemic and skyrocketing inflation.

“Whilst these rising numbers are good news, clearly more can and must be done to deliver homes as the housing crisis grips this country. The Housing Delivery Programme, largest council led housing delivery programme since 1970’s, is well under way and is delivering sustainable, affordable and accessible homes. Our Local Plan will be key in continuing this work, which will facilitate economic growth and deliver the homes that York needs - all whilst protecting York’s Green Belt to maintain the unique and historic character of the city.”
