York’s Liberal Democrats have expressed concerns after thieves stole metal gulley covers from streets in communities including Haxby, Skelton, Stockton on the Forest and Foxwood. The thefts seem to have occurred on the evening of Wednesday 30 October into the morning of Thursday 31 October.

Liberal Democrat candidate for the Haxby & Wigginton by-election Richard Watson commented:

“We know that the police are investigating a recent crime spree in which the gulley covers have been stolen in Haxby and other areas. I spoke with a Council official on Friday morning and they confirmed the Council is currently installing temporary covers for the safety of residents.

“It is disappointing that there has not been the type of investment Liberal Democrats would have liked to have seen into community policing and which we fought for previously. We understand that replacing these covers will be expensive for the Council, which highlights the need for more investment into community policing and prevention.

“If anyone sees anything suspicious please phone 101 and report it.”
