York awarded Purple Flag status

After several years of partnership work across the city, York has been awarded the prestigious Purple flag status in recognition for its diverse, safe and vibrant evening economy.

The achievement of the award, a 2019 York Lib Dem manifesto commitment, recognises the continued collaboration with partners to provide a safe and vibrant night-time economy. 

Awarded by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), Purple Flag is an international accreditation process, which is comparable to the ‘Green Flag’ for parks and ‘Blue Flag’ for beaches. The prestigious scheme serves as a recognition for towns and cities that provide a vibrant, safe and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture for visitors and residents to enjoy.

Councillor Darryl Smalley, Executive Member for Culture, Leisure & Communities at City of York Council commented:

“This is yet another York Lib Dem pledge delivered for the benefit of our city and communities.

“We are all rightly proud of our vibrant and welcoming city and the many excellent businesses and entertainment venues which light up the city centre every evening.

“This award is a recognition of the commitment and work of many partners and businesses, who do an amazing work to ensure York is a place where people can enjoy a safe and entertaining night out. It serves as a reminder of the fantastic range of independent and high street bars, restaurants and venues on offer, which make our city so unique.

“Of course there is always more work to do, and our task is now to continue this successful partnership and live up to the standards of the Purple Flag scheme.”
