York Central infrastructure works to being imminently
Homes England has today confirmed that John Sisk and Son Ltd are to deliver over £100m of vital infrastructure at York Central. With work expected to begin imminently, this marks a significant milestone for the city-centre brownfield site.
More recently site preparation works were carried out by the Council and partners, which included creating the site compound and temporary access, clearing vegetation on land owned by Homes England and Network Rail and removing three disused buildings.
Over the next three years, John Sisk and Son will deliver the second phase of key infrastructure works needed to enable the transformation of the site. This includes the construction of a new road bridge and a new pedestrian and cycle footbridge over the East Coast Main Line railway, two kilometres of road (with separated cycle and pedestrian paths) that will connect Water End through the site to Leemans Road, and a rail spur to the National Railway Museum. John Sisk and Son will also provide the earthworks and utility works for the entire site.
Cllr Keith Aspden, Liberal Democrat Leader of City of York Council, commented:
“This infrastructure work will unlock the site and turn the York Central plans from a vision to reality. The site and its possibilities have been talked about for decades, but it’s the Liberal Democrat-led administration which is getting diggers on the ground to deliver for our city and generations to come.
“It’s difficult to overestimate the impact the delivery of this project will have on the city’s economic prosperity and future. I’m delighted to see our partners have confidence in this administration’s vision and work.
“York Central remains one of the most important and attractive regeneration sites in the country and is an opportunity that many other towns and cities in the UK would envy, with housing, commercial opportunities and new cultural and open spaces. We will continue to work with partners to transform our city’s future, driving inclusive growth and creating a new sustainable community in the heart of York.”
